Learn to dive in the Andaman Islands
A small dive school on Swaraj Dweep. Four divers to an instructor, warm clear water, and nobody rushed past the thing they came to look at. Bioluminescence included.
Est. descent — 40 m to the limit · Air: checked twice · Curiosity: required

Depth 5 m — the lagoon
Paatal is the old word for the world underneath. We opened in 2016 with one boat and two instructors, on a beach where the reef starts thirty metres from the door. We are still small, and we mean to stay that way.
The rule the school is built on: never more than four divers to one instructor, and two for a first dive. It means we turn people away in January. It also means nobody here has ever been hurried through a skill they were not ready for.
Most of our students arrive nervous and a third arrive unable to swim well. You do not need to be brave. You need to be able to breathe slowly, and we can teach you that on the sand.
Signal log — surface reports
"I cried into my mask at three metres and my instructor just waited, holding my hand, until I was done. Then we went and found a turtle."
— Open Water student, from Bengaluru
"I have dived in nine countries. This is the only school that cancelled a dive because the conditions were merely fine."
— Fun diver, 140 logged dives
"My mother is sixty-one and did not swim. She did a try dive, then stayed two extra days to do it again."
— Advanced student, from Kolkata

A morning on how pressure works and how the gear fits. After lunch you kneel on sand in chest-deep water and breathe underwater for the first time. Nobody goes deeper until that feels ordinary.
Two boat dives a day. You practise each skill once at the surface and once on the reef: clearing a mask, sharing air, hovering without your hands. The rest of the time you look at fish.
Your buddy and you plan the last dive yourselves: depth, time, air, the way back. Your instructor stays behind you and says nothing. You surface a certified diver.
